LEARNING INNOVATION TALKS 03 (LIT03)
The 3rd Learning Innovation Talks (LIT03) on the 22 May (2013) was organized by the International Medical University (IMU). This was the first LIT to be done fully online. And this is totally inline with IMUs 3Is, which are Insight, Imagination and Innovation.

As far as I know, this was also the first 1-Day Online Seminar held by a University in Malaysia. WE MADE HISTORY, TOO! Congratulations!
Also, we would like to thank the WizIQ management and Dr. Nellie Deutsch for supporting the event by ensuring that the WizIQ platform was in tip-top condition for the online seminar.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone involved in the online seminar for making it such a success, and that includes the IMU ITS personnel, speakers and participants.

LIT03 was very fortunate to have a collection of exceptional educators and experts (8 Malaysians and 2 International) to start with, and they certainly lived up to that during LIT03. They were all exceptional, inspiring and unique in their own ways, so instead of me babbling about them, please enjoy the unedited recordings below of all the sessions during LIT03.

STATS & REFLECTIONS
225 people from 21 countries registered for LIT03. As expected not everyone turned up (which is totally normal for free online events). For the morning session 89 participants turned up (39.6% out of 225), and 81 participants (36%) for the afternoon session.
However, what I found most astonishing was where the registered participants are attached to...
So, the promotion and awareness of LIT03 was really good (The LIT03 website: 3,100+ page-views).
67 participants at LIT03 fulfilled the attendance requirements to get the Digital Certificate of Attendance, and once they complete the evaluation and mystery quiz form, they will be e-mailed the certificates on the 29 May (2013).
If we compare LIT03 to our previous Learning Webinar Series 2012, which had 12 world renowned educators giving online talks, LIT03 has been a SMASHING SUCCESS.
None of the previous webinars organized by IMU last year (2012) reached more than 50+ participants (each session was for only one hour, too). However, LIT03 had 80+ participants for both morning and afternoon sessions (3 hours each), and 67 attended both. WOW!
All IMU webinars since we started (Feb 2012) have had great local and International speakers, but besides good viral promotion, I believe the introduction of giving a digital certificate for (real) participation is an important extrinsic factor to increase the attendance. Besides learning, people also want to get recognition for their attendance and participation.
Compared to other educational webinar series around the world in terms of attendee numbers, we still have a long way to go. But, if we talk about quality, engagement and excitement, LIT03 was exceptional.
Although, we had some technical glitches on the way, it was a memorable and inspiring learning event, which will be remembered for years to come by many of the participants and speakers (and those that watch the recordings).

Library Organization Update!
Do you remember my post about my library organization system from the other week? Well, one of the coolest parts of the library system is you can email me at aturntolearn@gmail.com with any labels you want me to add. Some people already emailed me their lists and here is the first update of the product!
This update added the following 30 labels, bringing the file total up to 112 labels! (To see the original list or 82 labels, click here). What Did They Say Wednesday! Linky Party!
Reason #5,765,432,765 why I love teaching: kids say the funniest and cutest things! I thought it would be so much fun to read all of the things that kids all over the world are saying... so I decided to start a weekly linky party "What Did They Say? Wednesday!"
Here is my "What Did They Say?" story for this week:
In my class this week, one of my little Kindergarten students says in his most serious voice, "Ms. Jessica, theres a problem with one the books Im taking home today." Im fully expecting for one of the books to have a tear in it, yet he pulls a brand new book out of his bag... a book about bats.
I couldnt find a picture of the real book online, but the cover had a picture of a bat on it, like this:
He then says to me, while pointing to the words, "The words of my book go this way," Then, he flips the book upside down and says, "But the bat goes this way. The picture is upside down!" He was pretty convinced that he found a publishing error! I obviously explained to him that bats like to hang upside down... but it was hard to convince him that the book was printed correctly!

Gamifying Classroom Learning at LIT02!

Lets congratulate Norhayati, her team and Taylors University for a learning rich and well organized Learning Innovation Talks (LIT) 02! THANK YOU!
Sadly it was a smaller crowd than during LIT 01 (30+ compared to 100+), but interestingly most participants lasted until the end. I think this was due to the fact that we had some awesome speakers around including Mimma and Norhayati from LIC (Learning Innovation Circle).
Personally, I learned a lot, had great fun, and met some interesting new educators with passion to innovate and share (Al-Hamdulilla!).
MY TALK
My self-assessment gives me a C++. This was the first time I gave a 45 minute talk about gamification or gamifying classroom learning, so I still got tremendous room for improvement in gaming it (LOL!). Overall, I really enjoyed the whole learning cycle, especially the researching and preparation part. Here are the slides for you to explore (please dont ignore the awesome URLs on most slides):

LEARNING NOTES
A Twitter hashtag #LIT02 was set up during the Learning Innovation Talks to encourage those who were using Twitter to share their tweets during the event (Forgot to announce it!!!). However, only 3 (awesome people) joined the sharing session using this Twitter hashtag (out of 30+ participants).
So, if you are interested to recap or discover the most important learning insights I shared during the talks using Twitter, here they are (URLs are clickable):

Timing is important! This time around, most active LICers and even many lecturers from Taylors University were busy with everything from giving talks, mid-term exams, returning from India to being engrossed in correcting exams according to crazy deadlines.
So, next time I suppose we need to negotiate a LIT time were most can make it, and if agreed must stick to their agreement to participate and speak.
Also, since we are talking about INNOVATION TALKS, we need to innovate and explore new alternative frontiers in empowering it to happen. As such, we are considering that that the next LIT or LIT 03 will be fully online some time during APRIL 2013. This will empower us also to invite speakers and have participants from any corner of the world. Better yet, it will be totally free to attend (except for our time), if I get my way.
So, LIT 03 will be organized by IMU and will be fully online (April 2013). Can it go wrong? Of course! But if you dont try to innovate (before making an opinion), you might as well be a chicken!

Help Your Students Write Numbers!
Looking ahead to my September curriculum, one of our Kindergarten topics is Numbers 0-10. I decided to revamp my current number posters and make them a bit fancier looking, and this was the result! Im really pleased with how they came out!
I made them in color and in black and white, and in three different sizes so you can pick which set words best for you... the set is $2.50 at TPT.
I also made the borders myself, so keep your eye out for those in the near future!

One of the sizes is below... on a full sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper.

Another option is to have four labels on a sheet of paper.
All three sizes are in color and black and white! And I plan on creating another set for numbers 11-20 over the summer as well! Enjoy!
