I wait with bated breath

RSC published some great news today that they are going to release the Southern Pacific Donner Pass route in late November. Apparently it will start in Roseville Yard and end in Reno... which is really great, but will this affect my route?

Originally I was not going to go past Roseville, making the Yard the last phase of the project the proverbial "frosting on the cake" so to speak because it is one of the largest and oldest yards this side of the Sierras. I only recently thought to expand the route to Auburn because it would offer the CC a completely different venue of forested mountains, tunnels and vistas as appose to the huge expanse of flat land and salt marshes along the majority of the currently planned route. Luckily this is happening in Phase III which would have started next year, so I have time to decide what my options are (like if I can join my work to theirs making a monster route).

I am curious about a couple other issues as well. RSC mentions they will have an SD40-2 in SP livery. I hope they get this right and make it a tunnel motor (SD40T-2) because the truth is that they did not own any non-tunnel motors. In fact they were built specifically to handle the many snow sheds of Donner Pass. The second item I would like to see would have been completely at home on Donner Pass, a rotary snow plow. Many of these were based in Roseville and it would be nice if RSC make a couple types and included a scenario where we could drive one up the mountain (with a passenger view within the plow itself).

Overall I am looking forward to this release. I only hope they get it right, because this is certainly a unique route with years of history, railfaning, and natural beauty.

What is WiFi Direct?

When someone mentions Wi-Fi most people will immediately think of surfing the internet, but theres more to it than just that. Wi-Fi Direct is a certificate of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which includes over 600 members such as Apple, LG, Intel, Microsoft and Dell. A host of devices these days are Wi-Fi Direct compatible - most notably Tablets, Laptops, Digital Cameras. The Samsung Galaxy S (launched in 2010) was one of the first smartphones to include this feature, and as of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, all Android smartphones have this feature included natively.

Wi-Fi Direct can be seen as a sort of second generation Wi-Fi, as it allows compatible devices which do not have their own internet connection, to establish a mutual connection with ones that do (Hotspots, modems or routers). Thanks to Wi-Fi Direct, you can build up a wireless network between multiple devices. In addition, you can use Wi-Fi Direct in combination with Miracast to screencast onto another device with a display. The newest generation of Wi-Fi Direct is also NFC compatible.

How to set up Wi-Fi Direct?

Every Android smartphone that uses Android 4.0 and above has Wi-Fi Direct functionality (bar some very rare exceptions). While the systems user interfaces might vary, setting this functionality up is relatively simple and unified across all devices. Wi-Fi Direct does not natively support file transfers at the moment, so you will need to install a third party app. We recommend "Send Anywhere".

To turn on Wi-Fi Direct, go into Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi then tap on the Wi-Fi Direct tab at the top. Your smartphone will start scanning for devices that you can connect to.

Unlike with Bluetooth, there is no button or anything that you need to tap to turn Wi-Fi Direct on. Wi-Fi Direct is enabled the moment you have a stable internet connection. This doesnt mean that Wi-Fi Direct is on all the time. Your smartphone only starts scanning for nearby devices to connect to when you tap on the Wi-Fi Direct tab.

Why would you use Wi-Fi Direct?

As mentioned above, Wi-Fi direct allows devices without their own internet connection to connect to one which does. In the case of Android Smartphones and devices, you can connect them and quickly transfer files without the hassle of cables. So, is Wi-Fi Direct just a glorified version of Bluetooth? Well, yes and no. The advantage of using Wi-Fi Direct over Bluetooth, is that the Wi-Fi range and transfer speeds are significantly higher than those of Bluetooth. So in short - use Wi-Fi Direct if you want a better way to send files from one device to another.

Get Document that Triggered Event

The correct document isnt always the one in front...

Event handlers are ways to run scripts when certain key events happen in Adobe InDesign or Adobe InCopy. Most things can be caught if there is a menu version of that function. Adobes documentation does a decent job of explaining the common events, but not what to do with the event itself, and is downright poor at the rest of the event handler issues.

But below is a very simple function that you can call inside the event handlers for open and for close event. Imagine you had multiple documents open. Now imagine that the windows are stacked so that you can see the close button for all the windows. Now assume you have an event handler that will do something useful (like look for overset text, preflight, adjust folios, for log a version comment). Well your event handler needs to know which document you just tried to close. That is where this function comes into play.

Event handlers always reference a function. But the function is a specified only in name. You cant pass it anything. Well your event handler will always receive a single argument -- an event. And the event has a property called .target and that .target property has another property .name. And the name of the target of the event is the name of the document.

How to use the Do not Disturb features in latest android smartphones

The reason why I love Android devices is that it can do things others just cant. Android device has lots of important features which we can describe it as unlimited, but you might not be aware of this most important features because arent putting attention or just overlooking them which is also of very important to your Android device.

Today we will discuss on how to Silence your Android device with "Do Not Disturb". Do Not Disturb is a feature in Android devices running Lollipop, Marshmallow or Android 7.0 Nougat, it allows you to limit the way sounds and notifications work on your smartphone. Mute all calls and alerts, except for your selected exceptions.

You can limit interruptions with "Do Not Disturb" mode. This mode mutes your device so that it doesnt make sounds, or vibrate when you dont want it to. You can also block visual disturbances.

You can use Do Not Disturb to;

Automatically limit sounds at night or during events
Mute interruptions other than alarms, so you wake up on time
Get alerted to calls and messages only from favorite contacts

The Do Not Disturb feature usually located in the phone settings, although some brands situate it in the sound settings area. Do Not Disturb can be used especially when you are in a meeting, in some kind of environment or even at night, you can customize how you want your phone to behave when an alert or notification arrives.

It is better than the regular "silent mode" we are already familiar with. This is because when your phone is in silent mode, all other notifications automatically become silent but with "Do Not Disturb", you customize it to as you want.

To Use Do Not Disturb in your Android Device

Go to Settings
Click on Do Not Disturb
Navigate through the 3 options available and select the one that suits yours with settings.

Note: The feature is available for Android 5.0 and above, also note that some brands situate it in the sound settings area, so check "Sound and Notifications" if it does not appear in the settings menu.

Here are the 3 Ways to Limit Vibrations and Sound

Total silence: To completely mute your phone so that it doesnt make a sound or vibrate, choose "Total silence."
Alarms only: To mute your phone so that youll still hear your alarm, choose "Alarms only." This option wont mute sounds from music, videos, games, or other media.
Priority only: Mutes everything except alarms, people, reminders, and events that you choose.

With "Do Not Disturb" you can mute your phone completely, or let through the important stuff, like alarms or important calls.
