How to Use Remove White/Black Matte in Photoshop

In this tip I will explain to you why and how to use commands: Remove White Matte and Remove Black Matte from Photoshops Layers > Matte menu. Usually, you will use those commands after removing background around the object.

Why use Remove White/Black Matte

You should use those commands to remove annoying edge halos around extracted object.

You know that tiny white or black edge (border) around your nicely extracted object? You can automate removal with a single click.

Requirement to use Remove White/Black Matte

Commands that I am talking about lives in Layer > Matte > Remove White/Black Matte. Both commands are available only with the pixel based layer selected. You can not use those commands with layer mask selected. Sub-menu from Layer > Matte will be grayed out when a layer mask is selected in the Layers panel.

Remove tiny black or white edge around extracted object


  1. The first step is to select the pixel based layer in the Layers panel. usually, It is an object with transparent background and tiny black or white border which is visible when you place an object in composition.
  2. Select layer with extracted object in the Layers panel
  3. The second step is to go to Layer > Matting > Remove Black/White Matte.
  4. Use Remove White Matte from Layer menu in Photoshop
