How to troubleshoot and solve the NO SERVICE or no sim error on Android phones
I have no service on an Android phone. Whats wrong?
No service may be due to a number of reasons.
1. Network issues - Got to Settings<Mobile Network/Wireless and Mobile Network/Similar Option (Depends on ROM you have)<Cellular Network/Network Provider<Choose Automatically.
If this does not work and your ROM offers "Choose Manually/Select Network" and see if anything shows up. Choose the appropriate provider and you should be good to go.
2. SIM issues - Take out the SIM card and insert it into another phone (borrow from friend if needed) and see if signal shows up. This is especially applicable for the new 4G USIM cards (I use this method myself for fixing my Airtel USIM card). If signal shows up, insert SIM card into your phone and restart it.
While youre at it (and its not working) see if the SIM itself is damaged. Is the golden chip intact or peeling off. Fix the chip properly if the latter is the case.
You may also want to try shifting the SIM card from one slot to another, though I assume youve tried this already.
3. Factory Reset - Go to Settings<Backup and Reset<Factory Reset. See if network returns and stays when the phone turns on again.
4. ROM issues - If youve installed a custom ROM or ROM belonging to another variant of the handset (eg. Xiaomi Mi3 TD-China for a Xiaomi Mi3 WCDMA-India handset), youre likely to lose your network connectivity. This happened to me when I tried to jump the queue and install the MIUI6 when the Indian version still wasnt available. Worse, I got a com.android process failure, but thats another story.
So get hold of your original ROM and install it using the Recovery (CWM or other). Usually this involves copying the ROM (a zip file in some, a folder in others) and shutting down the phone. Press Down Button + Power button simultaneously and youll get a black screen with lots of options. Follow the steps to install the ROM and youll be good to go (I would have given you more detailed instructions but Im currently on MIUI and havent used CWM for some time).
If youve managed to install a ROM without rooting the phone (possible only on select devices), you will have to follow a more complex procedure involving a computer. If youre in dire straits, avoid this.
5. App blockages - Theyre rare, but some apps with superuser permissions (and device administrators) may be able to block your network. Do you have Avast or another av that has theft protection, etc ? If you tripped the warning system, chances are Avast thinks youre an intruder and is preventing you from accessing wireless networks (is WiFi and Bluetooth working, btw ?)
Any app that can block network access will probably resist removal during a soft reset (or factory reset using method mentioned above). Reboot into recovery (as mentioned under ROM issues) and carry out a factory reset using this method. Hopefully the app will be removed.
If it still around after a hard reset, youre as good as stuck with a virus program in Windows. Try installing a different ROM (using method above).
If all of these fail, the service center is the only option left.
